Is Togetherness the Next Destination for Travel?

For generations, travel has inspired storytelling in books and songs and fuelled the growth of cultures and civilisations. But over the last year, the world went on a different kind of journey, swapping passports for puzzles and beaches for binge-watching. Now, a new survey from IHG Hotels & Resorts reveals how much people are longing for human connection, to be with their loved ones, and to make new memories.

Close to 60 percent of survey respondents said they cancelled up to four trips (leisure and business) last year. More than half the travellers surveyed said they have now rebooked cancelled trips or plan to rebook them, with family vacations and visiting loved ones topping travel wish lists for 2021. And while the pandemic isn't over, the roll-out of vaccines is igniting hope and optimism, as respondents across all age groups, 18 to 55+, say spending time with family and friends is a primary motivator for travel this year.

IHG Hotels & Resorts is one of the world's leading hotel companies. With nearly 6,000 hotels in over 100 countries, the family of 16 brands is a collection of welcoming experiences, for wherever guests go and however they want to stay. As people get excited to travel again, IHG Hotels & Resorts is ready to meet them with a growing brand portfolio of stunning new properties like voco The Franklin New YorkHotel Indigo Dubai Downtown, and Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas in South Korea.

Yip Yew Chong brings Stories from Yesteryear exhibition to Sofitel Singapore City Centre

Singaporean artist Yip Yew Chong has been beautifying the city-state's streets for years with his vibrant street murals and now, for the first time, brings an intimate exhibition titled Stories From Yesteryear to the Sofitel Singapore City Centre. The exhibition, which features 24 canvas paintings and 4 digital artworks, will be showcased at the hotel from 26 February 2021 to 31 March.

Painted between 2017 and 2021, the scenes in the paintings are panoramic yet intricate and provide a visual history of Singapore including major cultural festivals and traditions such as the Mid-Autumn Festival, Hari Raya Haji, Chingay procession and the Hungry Ghost Festival. Yew Chong grew up in Chinatown and now resides in Tanjong Pagar, so his intimate knowledge of the area's legends and stories evokes a sense of travelling back through history.

To allow guests to really connect with the art of Yip Yew Chong, the hotel is offering for the month of March a special Yesteryear Peranakan menu which will highlight some favourite dishes that reflect Yew Chong's childhood and are depicted in the paintings. Yew Chong has also hand-drawn a beautiful walking map of the area, which the Sofitel will give to in-house guests so they can explore the artist's murals in and around the hotel after the exhibition.

IHG Hotels & Resorts has headed into 2021 by refreshing its brand to further reflect the hotel group's purpose of True Hospitality for Good, its evolving story, portfolio and the needs of hotel owners, consumers, and communities around the world.

The brand refresh reflects the company's growth to 16 brands welcoming guests and loyalty program members through the doors of nearly 6,000 hotels across 100 countries.
